Back Story
Long before the War of the Ten Clans, a single orc tribe of the Hopeless Highlands grew to its largest size in decades. One autumn this tribe descended from the peaks into the foothills where the Ice Moon Forest brushed the edges of the bluffs. Along this border a village of elves lived among the roots of the trees. The bloodthirsty orcs surprised the elves at dusk, quickly sacking their stores of provisions and slaughtering all those they could catch. As Theren's mother was the village herbalist, they're cot set a small distance apart from the rest of the dwellings. Hearing the death screams of the others mingled with the harsh grunts and war cries of orcs, Alanna took her half-grown son and ran into the forest as far as they could and hid in a hollow tree when he could run no more. They waited, tense and frightened, listening for pursuit through the night and well into the morning before Alanna dared poke her head through the crevice of the gnarled old greenwood. She gathered a few berries and nuts from the glade around their hiding place. Once they had broken their fast, Alanna bid Theren to hide again while she ventured back to the village to search for the other survivors. The afternoon passed very slowly for the elfling. Night came on and still he heard only birdsong. Slowly the birds drifted into their slumbers and the only sounds were from the insects and the wind. Theren wished he could lose consciousness in sleep and dreams as he had heard rumors that humans and other beings did.
For a night and a day and a night Theren waited leaving his tree only to gather a few handfuls of the plentiful berries and nuts within sight of the greenwood at midday. Watching the third sunrise from his dryadic position, he resolved to wait no longer. He crept along deer trails and listened carefully between every step.
By mid afternoon Theren found the source of the acrid smell he could taste on the breeze; the orcs had hewn every tree within the village and surrounding area creating a great clearing and from which they had built a great pyre for the few of their own kind who had fallen to the village's unprepared defenders. Elves lay where they had fallen untouched save by the carrion crows. Theren crept silently through the ferns and brush along the margin of the cleared area watching the orcs for signs that he had been seen. A third of the way along the curve of the denuded land, the elfling halted suddenly as his eyes recognized the belt he had helped his father weave for his mother for her sunrise day through the thickening haze. Three crude quarrels protruded from Alanna's back from a base of ugly red stains.
