Most halflings in Hedrimond live in their own villages and towns interspersed between those of the "bigguns," as they call humans. Though they do live for the most part separately from the humans of Hedrimond and have their own language, they welcome all visitors and are very hospitable to the few humans who do visit. Many humans fondly call the villages and towns of the halflings "hives" because of the way the excitable, curious creatures tend to nearly swarm those passing through for information and news all the while pouring out invitations to stay and to dine and to drink. There is nothing so much that a halfling likes to do as to sit and talk and eat and drink after a long day of work or travel. While it is common for humans to pass through the halfling villages and towns, they rarely stay long enough for a meal as they halfling dwellings tend to be an rather tight fit. There is an adage among the humans that says "as generous as a halfling at yuletide".
There are no halfling nobility, and they have no representation in the governing council. The human nobility and rulers tend to ignore the halflings as the halflings police their own according to the laws put forth by the human council. If a halfling is caught breaking a law in a human village or town, the human authorities will pass the fellow or gal on to the nearest hive known to have a gaol and let the halflings deal with their own. No one remembers if this custom is the remains of a treaty thought to have been signed between the humans and halflings long, long ago when they agreed to live peaceably together or if it is simply because the humans have difficulty taking someone smaller than the average 8-year old human seriously as a criminal.
Few halflings worship a single god. Most give offerings to one of the many gods as appropriate for their daily lives. For example, many give offerings to Habbakuk and Chislev during lambing and harvest seasons or to Mishakal if a family member is ill. Of those who do enter the temple of a particular god, most enter the temples of Branchala, Habbakuk, Majere, Mishakal, Gilean, Chislev, Reorx, Shinare, or Zivilyn. Openly there are no temples to any of the evil gods, but of the few halflings whose hearts have turned dark and been apprehended committing petty crimes, a few have been found carrying the symbol of Hiddukel.
